AKC Canine Good Citizen Certification

AKC Canine Good Citizen Certification

The purpose of the Canine Good Citizen Program is to ensure that our favorite companion, the dog, can be a respected member of the community because it has been trained to be well behaved in the home, in public places and in the presence of other dogs. The CGC Program welcomes both purebred and mixed breed dogs. The CGC Test is non-competitive and dogs are not required to perform with the same precision required in formal obedience.

What does the CGC test consist of?

In order for your dog to receive AKC Canine Good Citizen Certification he/she will need to pass 10 items on the test. These are:

  • Test One: Accepting a friendly stranger
  • Test Two: Sitting politely for petting
  • Test Three: Appearance and grooming
  • Test Four: Our for a walk (walking on a loose leash)
  • Test Five: Walking through a crowd
  • Test Six: Sit & Down on command and staying in place
  • Test Seven: Coming when called
  • Test Eight: Reaction to another dog
  • Test Nine: Reaction to distraction
  • Test Ten: Supervised separation

Dogs that pass all 10 items of the AKC Canine Good Citizen Certification test, include purebreds and mixed breeds, are listed in the CGC records at the AKC. Owners of dogs that pass all 10 items of the CGC test may order an official CGC certificate from the AKC.

A dog that earns AKC Canine Good Citizen certification is more likely to be a service dog, or purely receive recognition for their efforts and skills they have mastered.
